The Boatshed Counselling

The Boatshed Counselling came about due to a shortage in experienced and registered counsellors that specialise in children and adolescents.

I began my working life as a sessional worker for children with physical, learning and sensory disabilities. I was a police officer in the UK and have been a teacher in both the UK and New Zealand for over 8 years.

I have been a counsellor for over 6 years. In this time, I have worked as a school counsellor with students from 11 to 18, with the last 3 years as Head of Counselling at a local high school.

Along this road I have secured a BSc (Hons) Physical Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling, Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychology and a MEd (Counselling).

As a full member of New Zealand Association of Counsellors, I am committed to the code of ethics. Privacy, confidentiality and autonomy are hugely important. More often than not when working with younger children and adolescents we are able to work collaboratively with families rather than with children in isolation.

How I can help your child

Counselling aims to help you have a greater understanding of why you feel, think and behave in the way you do and so allow you to have greater choices in how you live your life.
Every child brings their own unique strengths, needs and wonderful personality to our sessions together.

Therefore, over the years I have built up a massively versatile toolkit. I work on a Person-Centred foundation, utilising Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Solution Focussed Brief Therapy and Mindfulness. In one of my sessions we may use my Sand Tray, get creative with Art Therapy or enter the endless possibilities offered by Virtual Reality and toys controlled by the mind.

The most important component of effective counselling with any age, but especially young ones is the relationship itself. I offer a safe, honest and trusting relationship with a good dose of humour.

My physical environment

officeMy office is warm, modern, cosy, private and welcoming. It is based in central Manly. Many parents utilise this time beautifully to pop into one of the local cafes, take a stroll along one of the beaches, or even pop in to one of the local restaurants for an early dinner.

There is ample parking available.

You can check out the space for yourself on my website, www.theboatshedcounselling.com

I offer a friendly, comfortable and highly professional service to the families I work with. I look forward to hearing from you.
