Home and Family is an established organisation that is well regarded in the social services sector. We have been helping the Auckland community for over 120 years. In the beginning, we were set up as The New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children and our focus was on helping mothers and children who had been abandoned or abused by fathers.
As we’ve evolved over the years, our focus has changed to meet the changing needs of society. Since the 1950s, our emphasis has been on the provision of counselling services for all family members.
Professional & confidential
We have a dedicated team of highly trained, experienced, male and female counsellors who provide a professional, confidential service. Our staff is qualified through a variety of diplomas, degrees and masters degrees in counselling and each person has been police vetted for your peace of mind. All of our counsellors belong to professional organisations relevant to this sector.
Understanding & sensitivity
Our service is sensitive to culture, ethnicity, gender and age. All of our staff have attended various courses on working cross-culturally and have access to cultural consultants when needed. We speak with you directly about what your child might need and where cultural differences may throw up issues of understanding or miscommunication.
Flexibility in meeting your child’s needs
Counselling will be focused on supporting your child to achieve their goals. This may involve individual sessions for your child and/or family sessions, depending on how our counsellors believe they can maximise outcomes.
All counselling is tailored to meet your child’s needs, while engaging them through the use of a variety of techniques such as play therapy, art, sand tray etc.
These sessions are usually 50–60 minutes long and are initially held weekly and then may become fortnightly, depending on your child’s needs.
We can also recommend other support networks in the community that can provide additional help for families, for example parenting programmes.
Three convenient locations
We have three locations in the Auckland region – Mt Eden, North Shore, Hibiscus Coast. Our premises are in established settings that create a relaxed and homely feel.
We want people to feel comfortable and cared for from the moment they arrive. You will be welcomed by the receptionist and invited to help yourself to a cup of tea, coffee or milo while you wait. We have our counsellor profiles on display, magazines to read and a basket of toys.
