Butterfly Creek is a New Zealand owned business and is managed by two of the owners – the married team of John Dowsett and Fiona Turner. The first stage of Butterfly Creek opened in late 2003 and development has continued at a great pace since then.
The Butterfly house
Immerse yourself among the living butterflies, watch them flutter around you and even land on you! Butterflies are attracted to bright colours such as red, blue, orange and surprisingly – white.
We have a daily release of newly hatched butterflies – we give a small talk about them, then you can witness them take their first flight. Some butterflies will fly away instantly, while some will let their wings dry for hours before flying off. Take your time and enjoy.
This interactive attraction features amazing indoor displays of dinosaurs, fossils and skeletons and fantastic dinosaur photo opportunities for the whole family. You’ll be amazed!
Our crocs – Scar & Goldie
Even better, you can catch them in action with our keepers at our crocodile show, every day at 1pm.
Greenfingers bugs about
Come and see our fascinating tarantulas, wetas, cockroaches, frogs, locusts and other insects and mini-beasts.
Children are allowed to hold and pat the animals – under careful supervision of course.
Kids love spotting Nemo the clownfish (and his dad Marlin) darting in and out of their anemone home, together with Dory and a host of other brilliantly colourful fish species.
We have a range of reptiles for you to meet during our daily encounters – the Inland Bearded Dragon, the Blue Tongue Lizard, Water Dragons, Turtles and Leopard Geckos!
Housed in purpose-built exhibits, Miracle (so named because she survived through tough conditions in her youth) and Chaska live alongside Merida and Ay in a second enclosure.
Junior keeper programme
Our Junior Keeper programme will leave them buzzing as they spend a day with our Keepers and animals, learning so much about them and getting to do things that only the keepers get to do.
Your child will even join the keepers’ area of the crocodile exhibit during the croc show – you can’t get much closer than that!
Junior keeper runs during school holidays or by special appointment but there must be a minimum of 3 children.
Special & additional needs
Butterfly Creek is a wonderful place to bring people with special and/or additional needs. We are wheelchair-friendly throughout the complex – this includes the train which can accommodate wheelchairs.
Butterfly Creek is easy to navigate around and is not a huge complex, making it easy for toddlers and senior citizens. You can visit Butterfly Creek in an afternoon or morning - a full day is not required to see everything.
We are conveniently situated 20 minutes south of Auckland city and a 10 – 15 minute walk or a 2 minute drive to the Domestic and International airport terminals. We have a large free car park with disabled parking near the entrance.
Bookings are not required to visit Butterfly Creek unless there are over 15 people - please email firstname.lastname@example.org to book. We are open every day of the year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day!
