A unique dental practice
ALPERS really is a dental practice with a difference. We offer full dental services for all ages but what we are really well known for is our unique orthodontic technique called Orthotropics. We like to treat children when they are young to prevent the need for teeth extraction and jaw surgery. Our philosophy is aimed at treating the causes of crowded teeth.
Our orthotropics team is headed by owner and dentist Dr Nicolas Anderson. Nic graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago in 1997. His further training saw him working with Dr John Mew in the UK who pioneered the Orthotropic philosophy and Dr William Hang in the USA.
Dr Nic has now been treating patients orthodontically for over 14 years and he has a special interest in orthotropics. He is one of only three people in New Zealand qualified for this type of treatment.
Alpers Dental also has a large team of highly qualified and experienced dental practitioners who are experts in their respective fields. We have staff who are specially trained to work with children from as young as 3 years of age – they are especially empathetic towards children (and adults) of all ages.
Encouraging natural facial growth through orthotropics
At ALPERS we not only look at the patient’s teeth but all the factors which contribute to a patient’s teeth crowding or incorrect jaw position.
This will include assessing the patient’s airway, sinuses, mode of breathing (either mouth or nasal), thumb or finger sucking, facial profile, swallowing pattern, diet, body posture and the health of the jaw joint (TMJ).
We will look at all these factors before recommending a treatment plan to suit you or your child’s needs.
We want to encourage a natural and more ideal facial growth and for this to happen the growing child needs to have the correct mouth posture of having their lips together and their tongue in the roof of their mouth.
One of the most common causes of crooked teeth we see is in children who mouth breathe.
For these patients we offer breathing courses to ensure that nasal breathing is achieved to help correct this mouth posture and to ensure that natural growth of the face and jaws occurs.
We have found that early intervention provides the opportunity for less invasive orthodontic care – the ideal age to start treatment with us is from 6-8 years of age, but we have started with patients as young as 4 years and as old as 70!
Taking care of the whole family
Our purpose built premises are the result of a wonderful design team who have created a very modern yet inviting practice where patients feel comfortable the moment they step out of the lift. We are not a standard dental office and the environment reflects that.
We pride ourselves on our high level of patient care and service and endeavor to make everyone’s experience a happy one. There is often a colouring competition running for the young ones, free WIFI for the busy parent or teenager, and complimentary tea and coffee – not to mention our Dinosaur chair for treating our young patients!
We are always willing to answer your questions and endeavor to educate our patients and parents along the way.
